What are plant exosomes? A buyer’s guide to cucumber, ginseng and milk exosome serums

A plain-language guide for clinics, distributors and brand owners: what exosomes are, how plant and milk sources differ, and what to check before buying.

“Exosome” has moved from research papers to treatment-room menus in a few years. For a clinic owner or a distributor, the word now appears on dozens of price lists, often with very different products behind it. This guide explains what the term means in skincare, how the main sources differ, and which questions separate a considered purchase from a guess.

What is an exosome?

An exosome is a very small vesicle — a bubble with a lipid membrane — that cells release into their surroundings. In biology they are studied as messengers that carry proteins, lipids and nucleic acids between cells. Their size is measured in nanometers, which is why suppliers describe them by particle count rather than by weight.

In cosmetics, exosomes are typically sourced from plants (such as cucumber, ginseng, turmeric or hop) or from milk. They are used as an active ingredient in serums and essences. Cosmetic products are not medicines: they are designed to care for the appearance and condition of skin and scalp, and they should be marketed that way.

How do the main exosome sources differ?

Each source tends to be paired with a different skin goal. The pairing comes from the character of the source plant and from how brands have formulated around it:

SourceTypical focusWhere it fits
CucumberHydration, soothing, after-sun comfortSummer retail, post-laser calm, makeup prep
GinsengFirmness, elasticity, tired-looking skinAnti-fatigue and overnight programs
MilkFine lines, radiance, barrier supportMed-spa aftercare, wrinkle care
Turmeric curcuminVisible redness, comfort, even toneSensitive-skin ranges, pharmacies
HopScalp balance, weak-looking rootsSalons and trichology clinics

A well-built range lets you cover several of these goals with one supplier and one set of documents. That matters more than it sounds: every additional supplier means another approval process, another set of minimum orders and another shipment to track.

What does “10 billion particles per mL” mean?

Because exosomes are counted rather than weighed, concentration is stated as particles per millilitre. Mars exosome serums state 10 billion particles/mL. When you compare offers, make sure the figure refers to the reconstituted serum, and ask how it was measured. Our article on reading particle counts, NTA and TEM goes into the methods.

Why does the format matter?

Exosomes are delicate. Many professional products therefore separate the active from the liquid: a freeze-dried (lyophilized) powder and an activator that are combined only at the moment of use. This “fresh-activated” approach is one of the clearest differences between products that look alike on a price list. We compare it with ready-mixed liquids in lyophilized vs liquid exosome serums.

Five questions to ask before you buy

  1. What is the stated concentration, and does it refer to the final, activated serum?
  2. Is the product liquid or freeze-dried? If freeze-dried, what is the activator and how long is it stable after mixing?
  3. Which documents come with each batch? At minimum you should expect an MSDS, a COA and the full INCI list.
  4. Which kit sizes exist? Treatment rooms and retail shelves need different formats.
  5. Can it carry your label, and what is the minimum for a private-label run?

Where to start

If you are new to exosomes, start with samples from two sources that match your clients — for example cucumber for a soothing step and milk for aftercare — and test them in real sessions. You can browse every line on our products page or ask for a recommendation based on your market and channel.
